Okay, I'm hearing it from all the way over here: "What the (pick a word, hell works well) is the Great WOP Project? Well, allow me to explain. There is a man. And that's not all! He wrote a series(as of right now) of five books, beginning with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and so obviously this set of books is called the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy. Within one of these books, Life, The Universe, and Everything, the characters encounter a rather nasty bunch of destructive white robots from the planet Krikkit.(Yes, I realize that is my name..figure it out.) I have included a section from this book to give you an idea as to what this project is about:

" What happened next they could not ignore. With a noise like a hundred thousand people saying ``wop'', a steely white spaceship suddenly seemed to create itself out of nothing in the air directly above the cricket pitch and hung there with infinite menace and a slight hum. "

And there born is the idea of The Great WOP Project. Conceived by Matt Bruce, the project has strived to find out, once and for all, exactly what the sound of a hundred thousand people saying "wop" is. Unfortunately, Mr. Bruce had a nasty hard drive failure, and pretty much all of the sounds he had collected from the volunteers were fried pretty effectively, leaving him "Mostly Wopless" as he put it(insert break for laughter.) Here is where I came in. I offered to take over the project for him, because I thought it was very cool and wished I was the one who had thought of it^.^ Mr. Bruce consented, and turned the project over to me(Thanks again, Matt.)

Down to the nitty gritty. I am looking for(we're going for optimism, folks) 100,000 volunteers to supply me with a sound file of them saying "Wop." I realize this is a pretty outlandish goal, but this is what they teach you to do in schools these days. If you are interested, the process is very simple: just grab a microphone, and record a short .wav file of you saying "Wop." and mail it to me at (deleted). It doesn't have to be shouted, or stressed in any way, just a nice, calm "Wop." is all I need. Also be sure to include, if you wish, your name and location, to be displayed so you may recieve your due credit when the project is complete.

When the project is complete, I'll will mix together a sound file of all the voices together, and post the final result up here on the page. While our hope is to have 100,00 people participate, I realize this probably will not happen, even though I am going to unleash my own tape recorder upon the inhabitants of my school and this city;) So therefore, I am going to set a tentative deadline of one year from now, which would make it March 12, 2000. If I have somehow by the power of Bob gotten all the volunteers by then, of course it will be posted. If the project seems to be stagnating then, I will put together what we have, and we will at least have some idea of what the elusive ships of Krikkit sound like. However, if we haven't met our goal, but the project is going strongly, I will extend the deadline a few months. Stay tuned to this page for news regarding the project as it progresses, including a building list of contributors.

Thanks in advance to those who are participating.
